Kitchen refit: a checklist before you order units
Most kitchen refit problems start before anyone picks up a tool. Settle these points first and the fit goes much more smoothly.
1. Measure, then measure again
Check room sizes at several heights. Old London walls are rarely straight, and that affects tall units and worktops.
2. Decide where the services go
Moving the sink, hob or a gas supply is possible, but it means extra plumbing, electrics and possibly ventilation work. Decide this before ordering.
3. Pick appliances early
Integrated appliances need exact cut-outs, and some need their own circuit.
4. Check delivery times
Units and stone worktops can take weeks. Worktops are usually templated after the units are fitted.
5. Plan the order of work
Strip-out, first fix, plastering, flooring, units, worktops, splashback, decoration. Each step depends on the one before.
